Moses Wertheimer, a designer who was born in New York City and is passionate about both art and Judaism, loves presenting these two fundamental aspects of life to the world in a way that enhances its beauty.
Since I was a child, I have always loved cutting multi-layered paper art or carving wood. I used to spend hours carving intricate wooden canes or other useful designs from tree branches, etc.
I liked cutting and tracing paper stencils of letters or calligraphy for wood or paper signage before computers were widely used for design.
In the late 1970s, I built my first guitar out of a wood fruit box using the fewest possible equipment. I sat motionless for hours after receiving my first scroll saw, pasting the design work onto wood planks and cutting them with it.
Both then and now, using a scroll saw necessitates pre-drilling each encased pattern before passing the blade through each hole. I would cut jewelry boxes, candle boxes, signs, and cases for Mezuza and Megilah scrolls. You can think of anything.
When computer designs became more accessible and affordable, I worked a lot with the many design tools that were available at the time, such as Coral Draw, which I still use today.
I've concluded several architecture and interior design programs, which as of today I still participate in.
The term "The Art of Texture" describes the process of planning and building structures while dealing with textured materials. "The Art of Texture" is how "Architecture" is translated when utilized in medium.
As a graphic designer, I have revived the centuries-old Jewish trade of paper cutting using modern laser cutting, engraving, CNC 2D, 2.5D, 3D routing, and blasting technology.
These well-known works of art are an exquisite depiction of several Jewish blessings, prayers, Ketubah (Kesuba), symbols, and artistic themes when paired with my command of Hebrew type, my comprehension of its language, and my ability to organize and produce text.
Cutting and engraving Hebrew and Jewish words on paper, wood, or even through glass or stone is associated with a number of rituals and ceremonies, festivals, and family life.
Paper cuts were commonly used for Ketubahs (marriage contracts), Mizrahs, and celebratory events. Wood engraving is often used for timeless prayers or signs, which have gained popularity recently on a global scale.
The media I employ for my multi-layered paper constructions not only describes the content of my artwork but also determines the style of awareness employed in its production and interpretation.
I create papercuts and engravings to explore and communicate various perspectives. I approach the process of making my intricate papercuts, which are intricately layered and meticulously cut pieces of paper, with meticulous planning and a very rational, analytical perspective.
The paper is cut from a different sheet at each stage of development, and my mathematically accurate papercut creations are produced through a meticulous planning process that includes elements of slow change and repetition.
To see the layers as a whole, they are cut, layered, and assembled. After then, a process of choosing and combining colors begins till the final depiction is finished. When my work is finished, it represents and conveys a creative process that both reflects and is impacted by our knowledge and perspectives.
Since all of my work is a labor of love, I feel satisfied knowing that this is more than just a wallflower hanging on your walls.
