Nittel Nacht

There are many communities who have the custom of abstaining from learning Torah on Nittel Nacht, which is quite remarkable and unusual in the Jewish calendar. Nittel Nacht often turned violent against the Jews, who often went to the synagogue every evening to learn Torah rather than learning at home. In order to keep a watchful eye in their families and avoid having Jews wandering around the streets in that night, the rabbis asked their congregants to stay home to protect their families. Many would play table games like chess to passtime, hence the custom of playinh chess on Xmas night. Thankfully today Nittel Nacht is a rather peaceful and lighthearted time among the general populace, and Jews are not really afraid of leaving home but many still play chess, cherishing the old custom of our forefathers.
