The Sinai Revelation, also known as the Revelation at Mount Sinai or Matan Torah (the Giving of the Torah), is one of the most foundational events in Jewish tradition. It marks the moment when the Israelites, after being freed from slavery in Egypt, received the Torah from God through Moses at Mount Sinai. This event is celebrated and commemorated during the Jewish holiday of Shavuot, which occurs 50 days after Passover. The Talmud, in Tractate Shabbat 88a, says that God "held the mountain over the heads of the Israelites" during the Sinai Revelation. This dramatic image is used to describe a moment of great tension and fear during the giving of the Torah. The passage explains that, when the Israelites were hesitant or unwilling to accept the Torah voluntarily, God held Mount Sinai over their heads like an enormous canopy, threatening to drop it on them unless they agreed to accept the Torah. According to the Talmud, the Israelites responded by saying, "Na'aseh v'nishmah" ("We will do and we will hear"), indicating their acceptance of the Torah, albeit under duress.
